Day 1 New Zealand

The Mischief has begun! We arrived in Auckland after only 24 hours of travel including 18 hrs. of flying. Tracy's first purchase was a glass of milk at McDonalds. How funny is that? I had a glass of NZ bubbly for breakfast. How fitting is that? We then headed for Wellington on Jetstar. Our transportation was aptly named for us. In honor of my daughter we stayed at Victoria Court Motor Lodge near the city center. For lunch we visited Fidel's. Yes it's named after him, & had a great lunch including a fruit shake with seaweed(very healthy) called Spirulana while watching all the strangely dressed college students. We walked down Cuba Street & made our way to an interesting visit at the national museum-Te Papa & it was free. We only visited for 2 hrs., but could have stayed all day. After a short rest sitting in the sun down by the harbor watching college students walk around in shorts & t-shirts in the 55 degree weather we headed out to find a dinner place. We settled on Scopa, Italian food & had garlic pizza, rocket salad, spaghetti amatriciana w/prawns & glasses of '10 Clayridge Pinot Blanc, '10 Auntsfield 10 Sauv. Blanc & '09 Carrick Unravelled Pinot Noir-Central Otago. All from NZ & very good. We walked back to the lodge for an early bed time & watched American TV. First impressions-everyone's been very friendly, young people dress really strangely, but they probably do everywhere, foods been innovative, fresh & good; & the country is pretty-lots of water & it was sunny all day, but cool. Wellington is known as the Windy City. Tomorrow we plan to go on the cable car, tour the Botanical Gardens & take the Bluebridge ferry to the South Island to pick up our rental car. Oh boy, I get to drive on the left side of the road!
