The day dawned as if we were in a cloud. No Helicopter service on the glaciers today. The drive over 23KM of mountain roads in the fog was exciting though. Instead we went tramping around Lake Matheson. We saw numerous ducks & heard lots of song birds. They get around 20 feet of rain near here so it was very jungle like on the walk.
We needed our exercise & didn't want to take the regular glacier hiking tours & instead walked to the base of both Fox & Franz Joseph glaciers. They are both advancing which is amazing with all the global warming that's going on around us. The water runoff from the glaciers is strong, gray & cold. The river beds change constantly & they have lots of warnings about earth collapses. Last year two idiots went beyond the barriers at Franz Joseph & had part of the glacier collapse on them.
Tracy & I had our own happy hour enjoying a bottle of '11 Neudorf Pinot Noir Rose w/ 4 cheeses-Barry's Bay Maasdam, Whitestone Probiotic Brie, Barry's Bay Cheshire & Mt. Crusader sheeps milk cheese along w/ a sundried tomato & olive salami. Now off to the Glacier Hot Pools for a nice soaky. Tracy was like a salmon jumping from the 36 degree C to 38 to 40 pools. Since she was so hyper I suggested she meditate & relax. After maybe 5 seconds she started talking. I mentioned you have to be quiet to meditate. A guy from the Netherlands was next to us in the pool. He was listening to our conversation and laughing so hard. We came back to the room & the Caps Saturday night game was on TV. If you can believe it! Of course, they blew a two goal lead and lost. Tomorrow we're getting out of glacier country & heading for Haast & the penguins.
